MODERN BUILDS

Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I’m a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I’ve focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

  1. What tools do you recommend for beginner DIYers? I have a drill, and a basic tool kit (the kind that comes in a tool bag) 😅

  2. I will never buy generic batteries for my tools or camera gear. There have been a lot of workshops that have caught fire from cheap batteries. Even if it’s just your tool that catches fire, do you really want to replace any of your tools to save $30? I certainly don’t want to have to replace my camera due to knock-off battery fires. If you buy OEM, then your warranty still applies. I have a whole lot of Ryobi tools, and I buy OEM Ryobi batteries and chargers. It’s not worth the risk. Pick a tool ecosystem and buy a few batteries (I chose Ryobi since they’re cheap enough and I’m not a contractor who needs them for a pro jobsite). I’ve got four batteries for my 18V tools so far and three for the 40V stuff. I intend to buy some additional 6AH 18V batteries so I’m prepared for when I have to remodel our forever home starting in the next few weeks. I’m not willing to risk burning my house down just to save a few dollars on batteries. The knock-offs don’t have proper soldering inside, or decent thermal protection. Lithium-ion batteries are a fire and explosion hazard already. If the cheap batteries aren’t properly sealed, getting even the smallest amount of water inside them will cause an explosive fire. I’m not even willing to buy the cheap Vevor power tools, because then you have the same issue with whatever crappy batteries they have. I’ll buy other Vevor stuff, so long as it’s not something that could put my life at risk (like a chainsaw or something). It’s the one area of my life I absolutely insist on name brand. My husband is the same, although he doesn’t work with power tools usually.
